The 4 Reasons Your TEFL CV Gets Ignored — And How to Fix It
You hit “Apply” on five teaching jobs this week.
You completed your TEFL course.
You’ve got your degree.
So… where’s the interview invite?
Here’s the hard truth:
Most TEFL applications are rejected in under 10 seconds.
Not because you’re unqualified.
Because your CV isn’t speaking the language schools are looking for.
Recruiters scan quickly. If they don’t immediately see what they need, they move on.
Here are the four mistakes that are quietly costing teachers real opportunities:
🚫1. Your layout looks generic
If your CV reads like a university essay or an office admin resume, it won’t stand out.
Schools want a clean, modern, teaching-focused layout. If key information isn’t instantly visible, recruiters won’t spend time hunting for it.
Fix it:
-
Use a simple, structured format with clear headings.
-
Make teaching experience easy to scan.
-
Keep it to 1–2 pages maximum.
🚫2. There’s no TEFL-specific information
Having a degree is great. But schools want to know how you teach — not just what you studied.
Recruiters are looking for:
-
Age groups taught (Young Learners? Teens? Adults?)
-
Online or classroom experience
-
Teaching methods used
-
Lesson planning and classroom management skills
-
Platforms you’ve used (Zoom, ClassIn, Teams, etc.)
If this isn’t clearly stated, they assume you don’t have it.
Fix it:
Be specific. Replace vague phrases like “responsible for teaching” with:
-
Designed and delivered communicative ESL lessons for adult learners.
-
Managed mixed-ability classrooms of 15+ students.
-
Delivered IELTS-focused lessons using task-based methodology.
🚫3. You don’t attach your video, degree, or TEFL certificate
This is one of the biggest mistakes.
Schools want to see you — not just read about you.
For many schools, especially in Asia and the Middle East, attaching the following is non-negotiable:
-
TEFL certificate
-
Degree (or highest qualification)
-
Short introduction video
If these aren’t included, your application may be filtered out immediately.
Fix it:
Create a 60–90 second professional intro video. Friendly, clear, confident.
Attach all required documents every time you apply.
🚫4. There’s no sense of YOU
Schools hire people — not paperwork.
If your CV is just a list of dates and qualifications, it lacks personality. Recruiters want to understand your teaching style, your energy, and what you bring to the classroom.
Fix it:
Add a short professional summary at the top (3–4 lines). Think of it as your elevator pitch.
Example:
“Enthusiastic and adaptable TEFL-certified teacher with a passion for student-centered learning. Experienced teaching both young learners and adults. Committed to creating engaging, structured, and supportive learning environments.”
That small section alone can change how your entire CV feels.
