Want to Teach in Thailand, Cambodia, or Vietnam? Here’s What Schools REALLY Want

By January 2, 2024 Apply for Jobs, teach abroad

Tuk-tuk rides to school, weekend trips to island beaches, vibrant food markets, jump on the back of a grab bike and friendly smiles around every corner — it’s no surprise that  Southeast Asia remains one of the most popular regions for TEFL teachers.

But here’s the truth most people miss:

🛑 Getting hired in Thailand, Cambodia, or Vietnam isn’t as simple as firing off a CV.
To stand out, you need to understand what schools in this region are actually looking for. Here’s what recruiters in these countries really want:

💼 A Professional Headshot

No selfies. No sunglasses. No holiday photos.
Schools in Southeast Asia almost always require a clear, friendly, passport-style photo — you smiling, with a plain background, and dressed professionally. First impressions count.

📄 A Clean, TEFL-Specific CV

Schools want to see:
✔️ What age groups you’ve worked with
✔️ Any real or simulated teaching experience
✔️ Skills like classroom management, use of games or TPR, and adaptability

Even if you’re new to teaching, highlight transferable skills: mentoring, youth work, customer service, or anything showing you can lead and engage a group.

🗓️ Clear Availability & Commitment

Most schools prefer teachers who can commit to a full school term — usually 6 to 12 months. If you’re only looking for a short-term role, be upfront and flexible.

Bonus points if you’re already in-country and can start quickly, expecially in Cambodia.

🌏 Cultural Awareness

This region places a high value on respect and adaptability.
Mention if you’ve traveled in Asia, studied the language, or are eager to embrace the local culture and lifestyle. Even a short note about your excitement to try new things can go a long way.

🔥 BONUS TIP: Highlight Young Learner Experience

The majority of jobs in Southeast Asia involve teaching children and teens. If you’ve worked with kids — in schools, camps, or coaching — shout about it!

Large class sizes (up to 40 students) are common, so showing confidence with group management is a big plus.
